Japa Media: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What were you doing in Nigeria before you decided to relocate?
Rita:
Hi! I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in Communication. Before taking this leap, I worked with a digital marketing agency, where I led the execution of marketing campaigns for both global and local brands. It was a great experience, but I always knew I wanted more—both academically and in terms of life experiences.

Japa Media: What were the main factors that led you to decide to leave Nigeria?
Rita:
Honestly, my biggest motivation was my desire to further my education. I had always dreamed of getting a master’s degree abroad, not just for the quality of education but also for the exposure and new experiences that come with studying in a different country. That dream eventually became a reality.
Choosing a Destination
Japa Media: Why did you choose to move to the United States specifically? What attracted you to it? Also, what migration route did you take, and how did you learn about it?
Rita:
The U.S. was my top choice because of its generous funding opportunities for students. One major advantage was the ability to work as a graduate assistant, which meant I didn’t have to worry about tuition fees while also earning a stipend to cover my living expenses. This financial support was a game-changer.
For my migration route, I took the education pathway. I had a lot of friends who had gone through this process before me, so I learned about it from them. Their guidance and shared experiences really helped me navigate the journey smoothly.
The Migration Process & Challenges
Japa Media: Can you walk us through how you secured your visa and the challenges you faced along the way? How did you overcome them?
Rita:
After receiving admission and securing funding, the next step was applying for my student visa. It wasn’t exactly an easy process, though.
Some of the biggest challenges I faced included:
· Securing a visa interview date (which, as many know, can be really tough).
· Raising the necessary funds for application fees and other expenses.
· The visa interview itself, which can be quite nerve-wracking.
I was able to overcome these hurdles with the support of close friends. Their encouragement and guidance helped me push through, and eventually, I got my visa approved!
Settling In: Culture Shock & Community Support
Japa Media: Tell us about your first few months after moving. What challenges did you face, and how did you adapt to the new environment? Also, is there a strong Nigerian or African community where you live?
Rita:
Oh, my first few months were a rollercoaster! The cultural shock was real, from the way people interact to the academic system—it was all so different. Adapting to a new education system was particularly stressful at first, but with time, I got the hang of it.
One thing that made my transition so much easier was the strong Nigerian community at my school. They welcomed me with open arms, helped me settle in, and made me feel at home. Having people who understand your background makes all the difference when you’re in a foreign land.
Life Abroad: The Good, The Bad & The Unexpected
Japa Media: What has your experience been like in terms of cost of living, culture, work, education, and healthcare? What are some common myths about living abroad that you’d like to debunk? And lastly, what do you miss most about Nigeria?
Rita:
Overall, I’d say my experience has been pretty good. The system here is much more structured, and as a student, my cost of living is moderate—though, of course, I try to live within my means.
One thing I truly enjoy is interacting with both Americans and international students. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, and I love learning from their unique perspectives.
Debunking the Myth About Living Abroad
A major misconception is that living abroad is extremely difficult. While it does come with challenges, it’s not as impossible as some make it out to be. The key to making it easier? Having a strong community. The support system you build will help you navigate the tough days and truly make a difference in your experience.
What I Miss About Nigeria
Honestly? The food! I absolutely love yam, but since I’m on a student budget, I can only eat it once in a while. I also miss my family—nothing compares to being around your loved ones.
